Denise Fleming is an award winning author and illustrator of children's books.  Her artistic style is distinctive and recognizable with loosely outlined, brightly colored drawings created with handmade paper.  Beginning with her first picture book, In the Tall, Tall Grass published in 1991, she used a non-traditional technique of colored paper pulp and hand-cut stencils to create vibrant illustrations of insects and animals scurrying through blades of green grass. She continued to perfect her special technique and publish more than twenty picture books, including the 1994 Caldecott Honor Book, In the Small, Small Pond.

Her illustrations of handmade paper collage and stencils give her characters a soft, almost childlike quality.  Her work often focuses on the beauty of nature with sparse, rhyming words to highlight richly dyed illustrations.
