The reader gets a close-up view of vibrantly colored insects and animals crawling among the tall grass.  Rhyme and alliteration are used throughout this ALSC Notable Children's Book of 1991 as ants "tug and lug", and snakes "slide and glide".

Fleming, D. (2016). Maggie and Michael Get Dressed. New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company.
http://www.denisefleming.com/

Michael's mother needs him to get dressed, but he enjoys dressing Maggie, the dog, instead.  Bright yellow socks, green and orange striped shirt, and blue pants all go on Maggie complemented by white underwear for the hat.  In the end, Michael gets dressed, but only after a few surprised stares from the cat and his baby sister.  With sparse text and Ms. Fleming's signature colored paper pulp style, young children will delight in this silly story of true friendship between a little boy and his dog.

Fleming, D. (2018). This Is the Nest that Robin Built. New York, NY: Beach Lane Books.
http://www.denisefleming.com/

Told in the style of the familiar nursery rhyme, Robin builds her nest using twigs, string, and other materials from the animals that live in the forest and meadows.  Readers will notice a difference in Ms. Fleming's illustrations of handmade prints and collage instead of paper and pulp.  She creates colorful scenes of bright green grass dotted with flowers and buzzing insects, and a textured nest for Robin's blue eggs.  This book received a Horn Book Starred review in the March/April 2018 issue.

Fleming, D. (1997). Time to Sleep. New York, NY: Henry Holt and Company.
http://www.denisefleming.com/

Bear knows as he sniffs the air that winter will soon arrive and must tell his friend, Snail, that it's time to sleep.  But before she can sleep Snail must tell Skunk, and one by one the animals alert their friends to prepare for winter.  This beautiful picture book departs from Ms. Fleming's usual sparse use of text to tell the story of friendship and hibernation.  But the illustrations are in the style of her trademark handmade paper artwork featuring the warm, golden red colors of late autumn.  This book is part of New York Public Library's List of One Hundred Titles for Reading and Sharing.
